The history of Islam and Christianity in the Arab-Persian Gulf was based mainly on written sources. However, archeaological discoveries have also offered many insights that attempt to define the religious landscape of the area from the 7th to the 9th century. It is not always possible to identify the faith of the inhabitants when excavating a settlement, and such identifications are only allowed with the discovery of structures such as place of worship or a burial area, or specific objects such as crosses for Christians, and possibly the study of dietary habits.
