Cross-Germanic Linguistics x Ecolinguistics 3 : Eco linguistics and sociolinguistics in the Nordic countries
The third installment of Cross-Germanic Linguistics x Ecolinguistics brings us in the North. In this workshop organized by Sarah Harchaoui (Sorbonne Université), dialectologists and sociolinguists from Norway, Finland and Denmark will discuss the current relevance of Einar Haugen’s modal of Language ecology.
Kven, a Finno-Ugric language historically spoken in the northern provinces of Troms and Finnmark in Norway since at least the 16th century [Heikkilä 2023], has long been considered an “incorrect dialect” of Finnish. In 2005, the Norwegian Parliament recognized Kven as a minority language of Norway, protected under the general objectives of the Part II in the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages. This official recognition has allowed Kven as a language to gain a greater visibility over the last two decades in the Norwegian linguistic landscape, particularly in the province of Troms.
